Part of Newtown's Gravel Street car park could soon become designated for short stay parking.

Newtown's only short stay car park closed when Powys County Council's lease at the Ladywell Shopping Centre came to an end last year.

It allowed motorists and shoppers to park for up to a maximum of two hours.

Part of shopping centre is being converted into offices and the private car park will be used for staff working there.

That left shoppers without any short stay parking options in the town, other than on street parking for up to 45 minutes.

The county council is now considering designating the Gas Street part of the Gravel Car Park as short stay.

It would mean motorists could only park in that area for up to two hours.

A report going before councillors next Wednesday at the Environment Committee will seek approval.

"Whilst changes are being made it is appropriate to consider the provision of a short stay car park within Newtown," states the report.

"Following the end of the Council’s lease on the Ladywell Shopping Centre car park, there has been no short stay car park within the town.

"Short stay car parks are more conveniently placed car parks which cater for those not needing to stay more than two hours.

"The short stay status, with a maximum of 2 hour stay, increases turnaround of the spaces within the car park which improves the chances of people being able to find a space.

"The Gas St section of Gravel Car park is conveniently located to the town centre and could therefore become the short stay car park for the town."
