An annual report setting out the work and plans of Newtown Town Council has been published.

The Annual Report 2018-2019 highlights key developments, such as taking over some Powys County Council services, the launch of Going Green and other activities, have been highlighted.

It also sets out its plans for the current and future years.

Cllr David Selby, Mayor of Newtown, said: "This report is part of the Council’s efforts to explain its work and to ensure that everyone in the Town is aware of what we do and indeed what we can’t do.

"With our Facebook Live sessions, meetings, website and Facebook pages we seek to be an outward looking open Council and one at the heart of the town’s development.

"It shows something of the breadth of our work and our ambitions, and I hope that you find it interesting and helpful."

Cllr Sue Newham, who was mayor for the year, said: "Two major council strategies dominated the year: “You Council’s 5-Year Plan” was published in October 2018, after a long consultation with Newtonians.

"Reporting on this forms a large part of this annual report.  Work also began and was completed on the “Finding a New Route” tourism strategy, to bring together tourism businesses to boost the profile of the town.

"The opening of the Newtown bypass in February 2019 was a great thrill. What an impressive feat of engineering.

"The drop in the number of large lorries trundling along Pool Road, New Road and Llanidloes Road was noticeable straight away.  I was so pleased to be present at the opening ceremony.

"Internally, it was a busy year too, with a review of the Council’s capacity and capability to meet new challenges.  One of the outcomes was a reconfiguration of our staff team.

"Another was a reorganisation of staff working space.  As a Council, we employ highly skilled and experienced people, who work exceptionally well together as a team, led by our Town Clerk, Ed Humphreys. I thank them whole-heartedly for all they do for Newtown."
