Aldi confirms Pool Road plans with public exhibition planned

Planning permission is to be submitted for a new Aldi store in Pool Road, Newtown that will create 40 new jobs.

MyNewtown broke the news last month that the discount shopping store was planning to take over the former Greenhous Ford showroom following its closure at the start of November.

Aldi would not confirm its plans at the time.

The company has now begun a pre-planning consultation for a 1,332 sq metre store that will include a car park and landscaping on the site next to Morrisons supermarket off Pool Road.

A public meeting will be held at The Elephant and Castle Hotel in Newtown to allow the public to view its plans prior to a formal planning application being submitted.

It has to go through a pre-planning consultation  that will last 28 days before it submits a full planning application. The consultation allows people to make comments on the plan, although they can also do this at the planning application stage.

The exhibition will take place on Wednesday, 11 December between 3pm and 7pm.

The pre-planning application starts today and ends on Monday, 13 January 2020.

“The scheme would provide an attractive, modern Aldi food store in a convenient and accessible location for the residents of Newtown, improving customer choice and reducing travel times,” said an Aldi statement.

“The scheme would employ 40 local people at the store, with further opportunities via construction and the supply chain. “

The company said it would submit a full planning application in early 2020 to Powys County Council.

The plans come after many years of searching for a site by Aldi in the town.

The company had held discussions with St Giles Golf Club to acquire land on the golf course, opposite the current site where it plans to build a store.
