A digital information board in Newtown town centre is likely to be given the go ahead by planners this week.

Newtown Town Council has applied for planning permission to erect the digital display board outside its offices at The Cross in Broad Street.

However, Powys County Council had to seek more information about whether it was an advertising display or an information board. The town council has said it will be for providing information for visitors and locals about the town.

"The proposed site is in a prominent location within Newtown Conservation Area and primary shopping frontage bound by commercial and residential properties, some of which are listed buildings," said county council planning officer Richard Edwards in a report that goes to the planning committee on Thursday.

"Consent is sought to display one freestanding digital tourist information board measuring 1.95 metres in height, 0.87 metres in width and 0.197 metres in depth. The screen will measure approximately 49 inches and be a brightness of (cdm2) 2,500.

"The proposed digital tourist information board will be situated on the pedestrian footway adjacent to a listed building so as to not interrupt the flow of pedestrians.

"The board is considered to have been sympathetically designed in proportion to the building and would not be considered to impact on neighbouring properties within the surrounding area.

"The proposed finish of the board will be matt black which is considered suitable for this area. In light of the above it is therefore considered that the proposed development fundamentally complies with relevant planning policy."

Councillors are expected to approve the planning application.
