Association awarded for stray dog policy

Newtown's Mid Wales Housing Association has been awarded for its work in dealing with stray dogs.
The association received a PawPrints award at the RSPCA Cymru Awards ceremony in Cardiff.
The Pawprints Awards recognise the achievements of public service organisations for their stray dog services, contingency planning, housing policy, animal activity licensing and kennelled dog welfare.
Awards are divided into five PawPrint categories, awarded to bronze, silver or gold standard.
Mid-Wales Housing’s Community Housing Team received a bronze Housing Footprint award last year for the introduction of a pets policy, which fully considers the welfare of the animal, including the suitability of the property for the animal, with a clearly defined process for residents to follow, which forms part of their occupancy agreement.
Advice and guidance, also produced by the team, has followed the RSPCA’s good practice guide. This year the Association received a silver Housing Footprint award.
This built upon last year’s foundation work but in addition, the Association provides pet care advice, active promotion of permanent identification and neutering of pets, the keeping of a pets register and a proportionate response to prohibited types of dogs.
Jean O’Neill, Interim Director of Customer Services at Mid-Wales Housing said, “I am delighted to accept this silver award on behalf of the team, as recognition of the hard work which has taken place. Mid-Wales Housing continues to strike a balance between the pleasure that animal ownership can bring, against the possible nuisance that irresponsible ownership can cause."
The awards are supported by the Welsh Government, the Welsh Local Government Association, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
Lewis Clark, RSPCA public affairs adviser, said: “For twelve years, the PawPrints scheme has celebrated public bodies going above and beyond for animal welfare - but 2019 has broken all records.
“All across Wales, public bodies are putting in so much effort behind the scenes to improve local animal welfare outcomes - but these efforts are too rarely celebrated. PawPrints is proud to raise awareness of these achievements.
“Despite the tough economic climate, it is amazing that the public sector in Wales has done enough to secure the best year yet for this well-established animal welfare scheme."
