Council will spend competition prize on tree

Newtown's Black Poplar tree in the Gravel car park will be secured for the future following its third place in the Wales Tree of the Year competition.
MyNewtown reported last month how the tree came third in the competition organised by The Woodland Trust.
It followed the success of the Brimmon Oak along the Newtown bypass which won the competition in 2017, going on to win the UK finals before going on to the European Tree of the Year finals.
Newtown Town Council, which entered the tree, has said the £500 it won in the competition will now be used towards safeguarding the Black Poplar's future.
Cllr Richard White said: “The Town Council had entered Newtown’s Black Poplar tree which is over one hundred years old and I was delighted when the tree was placed third out of a short-list of seven. We were against six other trees including two in the Cardiff area, selected by judges but the final voting was open to all members of the public.
"We are all aware of the importance of trees to our very existence and third place means we will receive £500.00 towards the maintenance of the tree."
The tree is positioned in the Gravel car park. It was once sited on the other side of the river, but flood defence work and the diversion of the river meant it actually changed sides without physically moving.
