Newtown WW1 history forms part of video initiative

Newtown has become part of an initiative promoting World War 1 memorials via mobile phones.

Today is Armistice Day and the project highlights WW1 war memorials through Powys, including Newtown, as part of a project to bring awareness of war memorials to a wider audience.

"The tours were compiled by HistoryPoints and the Powys War Memorials Project, with help from local historians and others," said a spokesperson for Powys County Council.

"QR codes are displayed at each featured location on the tours. Scanning the codes (with a freely available “QR scanner”) brings to your phone a concise history of the location, along with details of how to find the next place on the circuit.

"All of the information is also available on home computers via the HistoryPoints.org website, where you can follow the tours virtually. Each location is mapped."

The Davies sisters of Gregynog Hall at Tregynon, grand-daughters of industrialist Lord David Davies, are among those highlighted in the initiative.
