A local businessman has called on residents and businesses to support the planned Open Newtown riverside project because of the 'massive benefits' it will bring to the town.

Stu Trigg, who runs a UAV photography and filming service based in the town, said the the small cafe part of the planned development at the former Radio Maldwyn studio, would not affect businesses in the town.

Plans are due to go before Powys County Council's planning committee on Thursday. The scheme is part of the wider Open Newtown project that is bringing recreational and open land forward for use.

It formed one of the largest transfers of council land in Wales when Powys County Council transferred large areas of Newtown to the town council and Open Newtown.

A petition has been launched day some businesses against the plans. It wants an open meeting to discuss the project before planners consider it.

In an open letter to the community, Mr Trigg, said: "The massive benefits that the riverside venue and other Open Newtown projects are bringing are obvious to most.

"Increased footfall, tourism, retention of locals, visitors from near and far, sports team visitors, local group. The list goes on and on.

"Most know that Open Newtown has done tons of public engagement, meetings, posted info in local press, social media, stalls, pop-up shop.

"This entire charade is built entirely on the premise of a few who think that a small cafe over there will destroy the trade that they take for granted, and have not marketed, promoted, raised awareness of either individually or by utter lack of action the the Newtown Chamber of Trade who is supposed to look after the towns business interests and promote collaborative thinking and future building.

"I know because I attended some meetings, and saw a lot of talking and zero action."

Mr Trigg added: "Don’t be fooled.  And don’t let them deny this town this or any other amazing opportunity to regenerate. This is your town.

"Support Open Newtown in their Sports, recreation, tourism, disability support, educational support, local business collaboration and other ways to help Newtown get back on track.

"I am in no way part of, or affiliated with Open Newtown.  I see the mud slinging going on and think it’s deplorable.  I’m a local father of four, a carer, a local businessman and have been involved with helping people with extra needs for over 30 years.  I have no vested interests other than these, the most important ones."

The planning committee is expected to consider the application on Thursday.
