A Newtown man ran the Lake Vyrnwy Half Marathon and raised over £2,100 for the Montgomeryshire branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

Gareth Wilson completed the 13.1 miles in September to raise money for the charity which is close to his heart.

Having lost his grandfather to the disease over 20 years ago, he has always wanted to complete a challenge to support this great cause. He started running 18 months ago and thought this would be a way to raise money.

He raised a total of £2,157.25 after setting himself a target of £400. Gareth said “I am so thankful to each and every person who donated to my charity run.

"To raise this much money is fantastic and kept me motivated as I ran the race. Motor Neurone Disease is a terrible degenerative condition which affects people in many different ways. I hope this money will go to support the lives of those sufferers in the region”.

His mother, Marian Wilson has been the Chair of the Montgomeryshire branch since 2009 and along with the Joint Secretaries, Jean Humphreys and Pat Egerton, work tirelessly to raise money for MNDA.

Marian said: “I am so grateful to Gareth for raising so much money for the Branch and proud of him for completing the half marathon. This year has been a significant milestone for the Association, celebrating 40 years since it was founded. We have held a Grand Draw and a Fashion Show to celebrate the occasion, raising a total of £4,188.”
