MP says Brexit must be delivered by 31 October

21/10/2019 @ 12:26
The UK must leave the EU by the end of the month, says Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies.

Mr Davies believes the UK Government and the European Union must deliver Brexit this month in the interests of democracy and the successful future of the United Kingdom.

Commenting on the current Brexit situation at the Westminster level, Glyn Davies MP said: “We must ‘Get Brexit Done’ this month. At the very least Parliament must have decided that the UK is leaving on the terms which have been agreed by the Prime Minister and the other 27 Governments of the EU.  And we need to end the uncertainty that undermines business and the economy as soon as possible - and hopefully by October 31st .

“I accept that while a majority of Montgomeryshire voters backed ‘Leave’ in the 2016 EU Referendum, there were many others who backed Remain. Even many of those who did back Remain realise we now have to leave and move on. We cannot continue arguing about this, going around in circles, as we have done for three and a half years.

“Leaving the EU is the biggest political decision of my lifetime and it has caused much division amongst families, communities and every other interest group right across the country."

He added: "We must resolve the question, to enable us to heal the divisions that the referendum created. And resolve it now. I did not want the referendum in 2016, and took a minimal involvement. But in 2013, the Liberal Democrat/Conservative Coalition Government did decide to hold it, and in 2016 the people voted to Leave.

"In the UK, we respect the result of referendums.  It’s an outrage that over three years later we have still not delivered on the people’s 2016 vote. It’s time to deliver and ‘Get Brexit Done’.

“I realise many people, including some constituents, do not want to act on the referendum result and want us to remain in the EU after all. Some simply campaign to revoke the decision to Leave, which I respect as a clear upfront opinion, even while disagreeing.

"Others want to hold a re-run of the referendum, claiming that in 2016 the voters were not properly informed and have changed their mind. Many write to me and email, expecting me to change my mind. I cannot do that.

"I can do no other than stand by the platform I’ve stood on at every election and whenever asked. I am not in favour of a re-run of the EU referendum, no matter what it’s called. I promised to do all I can to deliver on the public vote to Leave, and I stand by what I’ve always said.”
