Firearms officers have been involved in a stand-off incident in Newtown which lasted for over four hours.

Police involved in a planned arrest were confronted by a person who became hostile to them, according to Dyfed Powys Police.

The incident happened at Ffordd Eglwys at 6pm.

"Officers attended a property on the street for a planned arrest at around 6pm when the occupant became hostile towards them. The man would not cooperate with police and made threats to harm both the officers and himself," said a police spokesperson.

"Specialist staff were brought in to manage negotiations and the incident was brought to a safe conclusion by around 10.40pm.

"Officers remained on the scene for a short time to search the address. A knife and a pair of scissors have been recovered from the property.

"One man was arrested on suspicion of affray and remains in police custody at this time."

Montgomeryshire Inspector, Jonathan Rees-Jones, said: “There was a strong police presence in the area for around four hours while this incident was ongoing. This was to ensure a safe working environment for officers and to provide reassurance to those living in the area.

“I would like to thank the community for their patience, understanding and support during that time, and give them assurances this was an isolated incident - we do not deem there to be a risk to the wider community.”
