An exhibition of photographs showcasing the Montgomery Canal is to go on show in Newtown.

Glandŵr Cymru, the Canal & River Trust in Wales, is launching a free exhibition of photographs taken by members of the public which showcases the canal.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the £4 million Montgomery Canal restoration project, the exhibition is being held on 3 October at Newtown Library from 3pm to 6pm.

The exhibition brings together photographs of the canal taken by people living along and visiting the canal and includes pictures of the work to restore further stretches of the waterway.

Glandŵr Cymru, which cares for the Montgomery Canal, is currently working on a major project to restore a section of the waterway on the Shropshire/Wales border, which is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Known for its outstanding natural beauty, wildlife and heritage, the Montgomery Canal runs for 35 miles through England and Wales.  Currently around half of the canal is navigable but work is underway to bring further stretches back into use.

Sylvia Edwards, Montgomery Canal community development officer at the Canal and River Trust, said: “The Montgomery Canal is a magical waterway and this exhibition really helps to capture its beauty and highlight the work we’re doing to restore it.

“Research shows that being next to water makes you feel happier and healthier and with four miles of canal already restored now is a great time to visit.

"At Crickheath, you’ll get a unique chance to see the different stages of the restoration of the winding hole - the dedicated turning point for narrowboats - enabling boaters to return to the area for the first time since 1936 when the canal was closed.”
