Green light likely to be given to work on Town Hall trees

Work to clear deadwood and reduce the size of 26 trees in Newtown town centre is likely to be given the green light next week.

MyNewtown reported last week about plans by Open Newtown to undertake work on the trees within the Town Hall grounds.

Because it is a Conservation Area and owned by Powys County Council, it has to go to planning committee which meets next Thursday.

The work would reduce the size of the trees, some of which are overhanging Park Street's pavement and road.

The committee could make a Tree Preservation Order if it didn't want the work to proceed and to protect the trees.

But a council planning report states: "In summary, the proposed works are considered necessary in the interests of health and safety.

"On the basis that the trees will continue to contribute to the character and appearance of the area, it is not considered appropriate to make a Tree Preservation Order."

The report states: "The trees are visible by members of the public visiting the grounds and travelling along Park Street and Back Lane, but also by neighbouring residents and visitors to the town.

"The proposed works seek to maintain the health of the identified trees and therefore officers are satisfied that the proposal will not compromise the contribution made or character and appearance of the surrounding area."

The planning committee will consider the application at its meeting and the recommendation for the work to proceed.
