More litter bins thrown into the town's river

More litter bins and rubbish has been thrown into the River Severn in Newtown.

In the latest incident a bin has been thrown into the river close to the Longbridge. But county council officials aren't permitted to recover it because of health and safety issues.

And Powys County Council said if the litter bins continue to be thrown into the river they will have to be removed from areas along it completely.

However, some residents have already said they will retrieve such litter and urged people to report it on social media.

It follows another incident several weeks ago and numerous reports of fly-tipping in and along the river in recent months.

Powys Recycling, part of Powys County Council, has taken to social media on the matter: "Sad to see vandals have thrown several street litter bins into the River Severn in Newtown.

"Additional expense for the tax payer and potential to impact on water quality. We are liaising with partners to assess if they could be retrieved safely but we are unable to go into the river.

"If litter bins continue to be abused we will have no choice but to remove them completely."

Meanwhile, Open Newtown said it would retrieve them if they know where they are.

Posting on behalf of the group, Stuart Owen said: "If you see any black litter bins in the river then please take a photo and let us know whereabouts, so we can arrange to retrieve them. They cost about £100 each."

"If you know who threw them in then please send them our way. I’m sure they’d have much more fun retrieving them than throwing them in in the first place."
