Police had to undertake a high-speed pursuit from Caersws through north Powys into Shropshire following a burglary last night before the assailants raced down the A5 and M54 the wrong way before being forced off the road by a police car.

Officers from Newtown's Road Traffic Unit pursued an Audi car to Shropshire after it failed to stop. West Mercia Police were waiting with a stinger which the Audi managed to evade before heading down the A5 and M54 the wrong way.

They were allowed to use tactical contact to take the Audi off the road.

Newtown Roads Policing Unit tweeted: "Following a burglary in Caersws during early hours, 501 found an Audi that failed to stop. Pursuit authorised + West Mercia waiting with stinger. Audi went down the A5 the wrong way. West Mercia used tactical contact as it drove wrong way down M54. Enqs ongoing to I.D occupants."

It is understood the occupants of the car are still in custody being questioned.
