A Newtown businessman has been presented with a top award by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.

Scott Davies of Hilltop Honey has been presented with the Dr Emrys Evans Award ahead of this year's Royal Welsh Show.

David Morgan and Tim Dowdeswell representing the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society as judges travelled Wales to assess nine nominees.

The awarded is presented to an individual who demonstrates proficiency in marketing, wholesaling or retailing their own produce.

Hilltop Honey has grown over the last eight years and now employs 28 people at its base in Newtown.

Scott said: “I am hugely honoured to be recognised for my efforts to market and retail Hilltop Honey in this year’s Dr Emrys Evans Award.

"Hilltop Honey has experienced considerable growth over the last 8 years and has today established itself as one of the UK’s leading and most exciting honey brands.”

Steve Hughson, Chief Executive, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society said: “The judges found your story an inspirational journey, from a few hives at home to the huge brand that is now Hilltop Honey. They were impressed by how you had taken an idea to a business turning over £6.5m in eight years. You truly deserve this award.”

A certificate and medal will be presented on Monday, 22 July at the Royal Welsh Show in memory of Dr Emrys Evans, a Royal Welsh gold medallist and chairman of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s board of directors, who died on the eve of the centenary show in 2004.
