School pupil taken to hospital after minibus accident

School pupils and a teacher were today involved in a road accident between Newtown and Llanbadarn Fynydd, with one youngster taken to hospital by paramedics.

Newtown Police said the accident involved one vehicle the A483, near Llanbadarn Fynydd. The Wales Air Ambulance attended along with paramedics.

The driver of the minibus has been reported for motoring offences.

On board the white Mercedes Sprinter minibus was a teacher and nine pupils, aged between 14 and 15, travelling from Wrexham to Brecon to take part in an athletics competition.

At around 10am police received a report of the collision. Police attended, along with ambulance and air ambulance. One girl was taken to hospital by paramedics.

The rest of the group was moved from the roadside to the safety of Newtown Police Station for assessment and treatment.

Officers worked with the teachers to contact the parents of each pupil to let them know what had happened and that their child was in shock, but safe and well.

The road was closed for 1.5 hours and recovery of the minibus was arranged.

Inspector Jonathan Rees-Jones said: “Ensuring the safety of this group was of paramount importance for all emergency services at the scene. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt and we were able to update parents and move the remainder of the group to a safe location at the police station for assessment.”
