More than 400 people packed The Hafren to hear Newtown and District Male Voice Choir's annual concert at the weekend.

The audience were treated to an evening of song and laughter. The choir, conducted by Sarah Astley-Davies and accompanied by Greg Jenkins, performed a variety of musical numbers, including traditional Welsh numbers, songs from musicals, spirituals and other popular songs.

They were joined by guest artists mezzo soprano Sioned Terry and tenor Aled Wyn Davies, who also treated the audience to a number of solos and duets, accompanied by Menna Griffiths. There was plenty of laughter too, thanks to compere Geraint Peate.

Choir Chairman Dai Davies said: “NMV’s inaugural concert at the Hafren was a great success and a great time was had by all.

"It would take too long to thank everyone individually for all the hard work behind the scenes who made all this happen, so I would thank everyone, including Hafren staff and you the audience who made this a special night."

A raffle was also held on the evening, with £300 being raised for Little Hearts Matter, a charity which is very close to some choir members.

Little Hearts Matter is the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting and empowering anyone affected by the diagnosis of a single ventricle heart condition – or half a working heart.

The choir is now looking forward to a number of other events over the coming months, including singing in the Newtown Food Festival, several concerts and a wedding coming up before the year is out.

The choir has welcomed a number of new members over the last few months and is now approaching 50 members. However, further new members are always welcome – no previous singing experience is needed.

Anyone interested in joining the choir is welcome to attend one of the weekly rehearsals, held at 7.30pm every Tuesday evening in the Pryce Jones building, Newtown. Further information is also available on the choir’s website, www.newtownmalevoicechoir.co.uk.
