New season for Newtown Textile Museum

07/05/2019 @ 01:12
Newtown Textile Museum has undergone changes for the new season as it opens its doors to the public.

The changes that had been made in the Textile Museum over the winter were celebrated when it was formally reopened for the summer, on May 2, by the Chairman of Powys County Council, Cllr David Meredith.

The museum is now open 12pm to 4pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 10.30am to 4pm on Saturdays and Bank Holidays until the end of September.

Admission is free although donations are gratefully received.

"In addition to a proper bi-lingual sign on the building in Commercial Street there are new display boards telling the story of the development of Newtown in the 1830s," said a spokesperson.

"They include details of the entrepreneurs who helped to make Newtown the `Leeds of Wales’ and, at the other end of the scale, the working conditions at the time.

"The loom floor has been reorganised too with improved displays about the process of turning fleece into flannel. There will be demonstrations of weaving, on a new modern loom, and/or spinning on every third Saturday in the month. The first of these will be given on Saturday, 18 May."

The Special Exhibition this year focuses on `Design for Liberty’, telling the story of the work our curator, Stephanie Kemp, did designing and manufacturing clothes for Liberty.
