Big double boost for Energy campaigners

06/05/2011 @ 04:54

The campaign to halt what protesters call ‘horrific Energy Plans’ for Mid Wales has finally reached the national agenda following a double coup by campaigners.

Last night it was confirmed the issue will receive a full 90-minute debate at Westminster on Tuesday when Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies, will reiterate his call for a full enquiry.

That news came on the same day that TV weathergirl Sian Lloyd answered an SOS from the BBC to return to her homeland from London to ensure an in-depth report by its national news team could be recorded.

It represents a massive boost to the campaign to halt plans by Scottish Power and National Grid to build 800 turbines, a 19-acre substation and hundreds of pylons through some of Britain’s best untouched countryside.

Sian (below) takes up the story:

“The BBC called me up because they were unable to interview political figures due to their strict guidelines regarding interviews around election days,” she said. “I didn’t think twice. I feel very passionate about this issue so I jumped on the train to Newtown from London, did my interview and then returned on the next train back to London due to work commitments.

“I will do whatever I can to stop this horrific rape of the countryside which will turn Mid Wales in Britain’s scrap yard.”

That BBC report is expected to go out on the national six or 10 o’clock news the day before Mr Davies leads a high profile demonstration in Cardiff at a date to be confirmed.

Before attending last night’s vote count, Mr Davies confirmed that he had pulled out all the stops to ensure the debate reached the halls of power in London.

He said: “This issue is the biggest deal of my Parliamentary career. I will be opening the debate ‘Impact of wind farms on Mid Wales’. It will be a 90-minute debate starting at 9.30am in the Westminster Hall on Tuesday and it is usual that the opening speaker takes 20-30 minutes depending on interventions.”

Mr Davies admits he feels so passionate about the issue that he will “struggle to keep myself under control” but messages of support have been flooding onto his Facebook page.
