Residents along Llanidloes Road can expect a few weeks of interrupted sleep as Network Rail prepares to undertaken overnight rail repairs.

The works will start on Thursday and continue until 26 April between 11.05pm to 5.55am.

Powys county councillor David Selby has urged Network Rail to clarify if the work will happen every night.

Letters have been sent to residents along the railway in Newtown said essential track maintenance has to be undertaken.

"As part of our railway upgrade plan we will soon be carrying out railway modification work at Newtown," said the letter.

"This essential work is part of our commitment to maintain a safe and reliable railway. The work will involve compressing the ballast via machinery to align the track following renewal of the track.

"The work will be noisy and disruptive. We apologise in advance for any disturbance. Thank you for your patience during this time."

Cllr Selby is asking Network Rail to clarify whether the work will be every night and the extent of lighting and noise during this period.

He said: “Obviously maintenance work has to be done, but the railway track is very near to houses in the Llanidloes Road area and every effort must be made to reduce the disturbance."

According to the letter sent by Network Rail the work will take place between Thursday 4 April to Friday, 5 April and then Monday, 8 April to Friday 12 April, Monday 15 April to Friday, 19 April and Monday 23 April to Friday, 26 April.

Network Rail said: "Safety is a key priority and for this reason a large amount of this work must carried out while trains are not running. This means carrying out a lot of our improvements during the night and at weekends.

"During the work, Network Rail staff and our partners are briefed to work responsibly in the local community. Please be aware that the equipment we use means some disturbance is unavoidable, however, we will make every effort to minimise any unnecessary noise."
