Carno’s new primary school has opened its doors today for the first time.
Staff and pupils at Ysgol Carno have moved into their brand new building after months of construction work.
The £1.5m building means that pupils will now be taught in a brand new 21st-century school building with dedicated early years’ provision adjacent to the community hall and no longer have to rely on mobile classrooms, which have been demolished.
Fund for the project is a 50/50 split between Powys County Council and the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme, with a £500,000 contribution from Carno Recreation Association, donated by the Tirgwynt Wind Farm Trust
Cllr Myfanwy Alexander, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “‘This is a great day for the school community of Carno, part of a highly successful federation. The project, like the organisation of the school, is the result of creative partnership working and shows how working together can bring great dividends for our village schools.”
The school is part of a federation of three Welsh-medium primary schools, made up of Carno, Glantwymyn and Llanbrynmair. The school federation has been operating since 2014 with a single governing body, a single leadership team and a new Headteacher and accommodates 157 pupils across three sites.
The federation was recently judged by Estyn to be excellent for leadership with Ysgol.Carno receiving excellent judgements for standards; teaching and learning experiences; and leadership and management.
A formal opening ceremony will take place later in the year.
