Residents in Newtown are being reminded they face prosecution if they allow an unregistered waste carrier to take their rubbish and who then dumps it illegally.
The reminder has been issued by Powys County Council’s Waste Awareness and Enforcement Team after new measures to help councils in Wales tackle crime waste were passed by the National Assembly for Wales last month, as reported by MyNewtown.
New fixed penalties to help prevent illegal dumping of household waste mean households could now receive a fine if they pay someone to dispose of their waste and they dump it illegally.
Cllr Phyl Davies from Llanidloes and Cabinet Member for Recycling and Waste, said: “Residents may think that they have done the right thing by paying someone to remove their household waste but if they have not checked carefully who they have passed their waste to for disposal, it could end up being fly-tipped.
“Ultimately, households could face a fine if their waste has been found fly-tipped so it is important that they dispose of their waste correctly.
“There are plenty of alternatives available to residents so that they can dispose of their household waste correctly. As well as the kerbside collection, residents can take their waste and recycling to their nearest household waste recycling centre or use our bulky waste collection service for a small charge.
“We all have a responsibility to prevent our waste from getting into the wrong hands so it is important that households use registered waste carriers if they want to dispose of their waste correctly and responsibly.”
