Older drivers in Newtown have the opportunity to build their confidence by taking part in a free assessment being offered by Powys County Council.
Drive On is a free assessment drive being offered by Powys County Council’s Road Safety Unit for people aged over 65 years who hold a full driving licence.
The free, one-hour driving assessment scheme is aimed at helping older drivers in the county to drive with more confidence and safety. Assessments are carried out by Approved Driving Instructors and can be taken in your own vehicle.
"Driving is so important to maintain independence but the risk of being injured or killed in a motor vehicle collision increases with age – especially in those over the age of 75," said a council statement.
"With over one million drivers over the age of 80 on Britain’s roads, and with the county’s ageing population, the Road Safety Unit is keen to keep people driving more safely for longer."
As part of the Drive On assessment, participants can choose a partnered driving instructor from a list supplied to them and telephone them to make a booking. Participants will meet the instructor and drive for one hour either in their car or the instructors. During the confidential assessment, any safety issues will be discussed so that they can be improved upon.
Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “As people get older, it is often a good idea to look again at driving and consider whether a refresher course could be useful. An assessment such as this is an excellent opportunity to do just that.”
“Being able to drive is important for many older people to maintain their independence and this is particularly true in a rural area such as Powys. I would urge our older drivers to consider our Drive On assessment which could help them drive more safely for longer.”
