While London is the centre-stage for today's (Friday) Royal wedding, Newtown is making sure residents and visitors have a chance to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton with parties in the town.
Newtown Football Club will start the festivities from 10am today with live coverage of the wedding being shown on screens and a party atmosphere carrying on throughout the day with a range of activities.
From 4pm this afternoon, Broad Street will be closed to allow continued celebrations, live music and a laser show until 11pm tonight. Mayor Cllr Joy Jones said she hoped as many people as possible would come out and celebrate the occasion. "It's going to be a great day and we'd love to see people coming out and celebrating the Royal wedding with us," she said.
Meanwhile a Facebook poll carried out by MyNewtown.co.uk has found a mixed response to today's Royal wedding. The tongue-in-cheek straw poll, which has received 145 votes to date, has found a slight majority (39 per cent) won't be watching the wedding, instead doing something else on this Bank Holiday or, as we asked, 'Washing their hair.'
However, 25 per cent of those who responded said they would be 'glued to the television to watch it.' 18 per cent said they would be working; 10 per cent said they would attending a street party, and eight per cent voted 'other.'
