Names to be given to bypass bridges

07/02/2019 @ 08:35

Names for structures along the Newtown bypass are to be decided this week following consultation with the local community.

The Welsh Government asked Newtown Town Council to consult on suitable names last year and a meeting was due to take place yesterday to discuss the suggestion put forward.

It is understood the names might be announced at the official opening of the road next Thursday.

It is not known if the bypass itself will be given a formal name.

Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George, said: "Newtown Town Council have been asked by the Welsh Government to consult and suggest names for the new structures along the bypass. I will be meeting with Transport Minister, Ken Skates, to discuss these options and the Welsh Government will shortly be making a final decision."

The road will be opened by Mr Skates on Thursday.

It comes as it emerged a significant amount of work is expected along roads in Newtown by utility companies over the coming months after they were asked not to carry out repairs or maintenance to pipes and cables during the final phase of the bypass construction.

It is understood this was due to the increased congestion it could have caused.

Powys County Council, which will take over the maintenance of the current trunk road through the town when it is downgraded is also expected to begin to make changes to it as part of improvements to make the flow of traffic easier.
