New £1.5m primary school to open its doors

24/01/2019 @ 01:17

A newly built primary school is opening its doors a month early to allow parents and the community to have a sneak preview.

Work on the £1.5 million Ysgol Carno is well-advanced and parents are being invited to a drop-in on Thursday, 31 January between 4pm and 6.30pm where they can inspect progress and ask the delivery team questions about the project.

When complete the work will mean pupils being taught in a brand new 21st-century school building with dedicated early years’ provision adjacent to the community hall and no longer have to rely on mobile classrooms.

Funding for the project is split equally between Powys County Council and the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme, with a £500,000 contribution from Carno Recreation Association, donated by the Tirgwynt Wind Farm Trust. The school is part of a federation of three Welsh-medium primary schools, made up of Carno, Glantwymyn and Llanbrynmair.

The school federation has been operating since 2014 with a single governing body, a single leadership team and a new Headteacher and accommodates 157 pupils across three sites.

Work on the school started last summer with Oswestry-based company Paveaways awarded the construction contract.
