More than 190 gift parcels and 119 Christmas food hampers were delivered to children and families in the Newtown area at Christmas thanks to the generosity residents and businesses.

The Salvation Army in Newtown said it would like to say a big thank you to everybody who supported this year’s Christmas Toy and Tins Appeal.

"As a result of the generous donations of toys and tins from the people of Newtown and the surrounding area, local schools, playgroups, business, churches and various other organisations and individuals, we were able to deliver 196 gift parcels and 119 Christmas food hampers to children and families in this area," said Nicola Wain of Newtown Salvation Army.

"A huge thank you must also go to the many volunteers who gave their time to help with the creation of gift parcels and hampers.

"We know that your donations helped to brighten up many lives this Christmas and on behalf of these families we would like to say thanks."

Nicola added: "We would also like to thank the public for their continued support of the foodbank throughout the year by donating at our main collection points at Morrisons and our charity shop and Prayer Space on Market Street.

"Once again the staff and volunteers at the Salvation Army in Newtown thank you for your continued support for the work we jointly do to help in our community."
