With over £9million being spent by local authorities in Wales to clear roads and react to extreme weather conditions in the winter, Powys County Council has confirmed it is ready for any eventuality.

Councils in Wales were left with multi-million-pound costs due to the disruptions from storms and heavy snowfall caused by the Beast from the East in March.

Now councils are ramping up their preparations in case extreme weather grips Wales again.

A Freedom of Information request by the Local Democracy Reporting Service to all local authorities in Wales found that more than £9million had been spent on winter provision this year.

Powys County Council has a budget of £1.4m for its winter preparations and had 26,248 tonnes of grit and salt in stock at the start of winter season.

Re-stocking takes place during the season when required.

It has 28 dedicated frontline gritters with ploughs, plus an additional four reserve vehicles, and around 120 frontline staff. Other staff or sub-contractors are seconded as required.
