A review into council offices will be held in private

A "closed" meeting of Powys County Council's Cabinet is to consider a report into the future of the council's offices in north Powys on Tuesday.

A report is to be put before councillors into proposals that could see council accommodation consolidated in Newtown and Welshpool.

The agenda item will be discussed in private without the public or the media allowed in.

The council has already said consideration is being given to closing its main offices at Neaudd Maldwyn in Welshpool, which could be sold off, with staff re-deployed to other sites.

When the county council purchased Ladywell House in Newtown it was thought it would become the main northern HQ for the council.

However, the purchase was part of a commercial investment with offices being let to tenants for an income, with the council saying it will not be basing staff there.

The county council has offices at The Town Hall in Newtown and at other sites in the town, as well as Welshpool.

The contents of the report, by County Councillor Phyl Davies from Llanidloes, who is portfolio holder for highways, recycling and assets, is understood to set out proposals that will include the closure of Neaudd Maldwyn and consolidation of existing offices in the area.

The council said this week that at least 50 jobs will be axed next year as part of a need to cut costs.
