Senior council leadership could meet Abermule protestors

A meeting is being organised between protestors objecting to a bulk waste recycling facility at Abermule and Powys County Council’s political leadership.

Council Leader Cllr Rosemarie Harris, finance portfolio holder Cllr Aled Davies and Highways, Assets and Recycling portfolio holder Cllr Phyl Davies are set to meet villagers at the Community Centre next Tuesday.

Powys County Council has said that the cabinet members have received an invitation but are waiting for more details before confirming the councillors’ attendance.

The time for the meeting, which is being organised by County Councillor for Dolfowyn which includes Abermule, Gareth Pugh, and Abermule Communities Together, has not been fixed yet.

Initially, 5.30pm had been thought a good time.

But the organisers are now hoping to move the time back to 7.30pm to allow people to get there after work.

Cllr Phyl Davies said: “I’ve been asked to attend a meeting and I’m quite willing to do so.

“I have been unable to attend on a previous date because of a family commitment – but I’m happy to discuss the proposal with them.

Jeff Mathews, of Abermule Communities Together, said: “This is a very important meeting for the community of Abermule and gives an opportunity for attendees to listen to the PCC cabinet decision makers and to share their personal viewpoint.”

Cllr Pugh said: “All three have said that they are available and we are now looking to move the meeting back from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and we’ll need to confirm they can do that.”

Since the application was passed, by just one vote, PCC’s viewpoint has been to stress the importance of the site, to ensure the county hits Welsh Government targets.

PCC also believes the site at Abermule is “ideally located between the two main population points of north Powys,” which are Newtown and Welshpool.

In recent weeks, Abermule Communities Together protest group has received visits from Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George (Conservative), and Mid and West Wales regional list AM’s Helen Mary Jones (Plaid Cymru) and Neil Hamilton (UKIP).

The members of the group have said that they have concerns that the planning permission, which was approved in August, had been “rushed through.”
They have also spoken about delaying for four months to allow PCC to look at other sites.
