Long-awaited CCTV relaunch to be discussed

26/11/2018 @ 04:12

Plans for a new high-definition CCTV system in Newtown town centre will be discussed with town councillors on Monday evening.

Representatives of Dyfed Powys Police will meet with councillors at their monthly meeting tonight to discuss locations for the cameras and to allow the council's response.

It followed a commitment earlier this year by the Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llewelyn, to have the system operational in Newtown after the old one was switched off several years ago.

It followed a campaign by families and victims of crime in the town and pressure from residents and businesses for a system to be re-introduced.

Several people were brutally attacked in the town centre earlier this year, in addition to burglaries and criminal damage.

The Crime Commissioner has set aside cash to pay for the system. It has already been switched on in a number of other towns in the region.

Chief Superintendent Steve Cockwell and Chief Inspector Andy Pitt will meet with town councillors to run through what is happening to discuss the council's views.
