26/11/2018 @ 04:01

The Gregynog Young Musician Competition will host a Christmas concert at the historic Gregynog Hall at Tregynon, near Newtown, Powys next weekend.

It comes as the competition seeks entrants for next year’s prestigious competition, with past winners including Sheku Kanneh-Mason who performed at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex earlier this year.

The concert takes place on Sunday, 2 December at 3pm and will include a return performance by William Carter, 2018 Gregynog Young Musician of the Year.

The concert, organised by The Friends of Gregynog Young Musicians, will also include performances by Of One Accord Choir and the Montgomeryshire Youth Music String Team.

“We’re looking forward to the return of William following his outstanding performances at this year’s competition at which he took the overall title,” said Edd Rayner of the Friends committee.

“Not only will it be a very festive musical occasion, but a chance for the audience to hear some exemplary pieces by some very talented young musicians.”

Entries for the 2019 Gregynog Young Musician Competition have opened. The competition will take place on 27 April and will include Young String Player of the Year, Young Pianist of the Year, Young Woodwind Player of the Year, Young Brass Player of the Year and Young Harpist/Guitarist/Percussionist of the Year, in addition to the overall winner.

“As with previous years we are anticipating a larger number of entries from young musicians throughout the UK. Many of our past winners have gone on to train at some of the top musical institutions and conservatoires.

“This includes Sheku Kanneh-Mason who performed at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex earlier in the summer.”

Tickets for the concert are £15, including a drink and a mince pie. More details about the Gregynog Young Musician Competition can be found at www.gregynogymc.co.uk.
