Display will promote domestic violence support services

12/11/2018 @ 06:01

Local people are being urged to pledge their support to end violence against women as part of a Powys County Council promotion of domestic abuse support services in the area.

White Ribbon Day and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women takes place on 25 November.

This year to support the campaign a display highlighting the work to tackle domestic abuse and local support services, along with white ribbons and the pledge book will be touring the libraries within the county, including Newtown Library on 15 January 2019 and Llanidloes Library from 27 November.

The displays will be available during library opening hours. View opening times here https://customer.powys.gov.uk/article/1200/Find-nearest-library

Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Cllr Stephen Hayes says: “As a White Ribbon authority we are pleased to support this year’s campaign. As part of the display, there will be an opportunity for people to collect a white ribbon and make the pledge never to commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence against women.

“The last national crime survey shows over 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 6 men will be affected at some time in their lives by domestic abuse. Men, as well as women, can be the victims, and it also affects same-sex relationships.”

“I’d urge you to go along to your library to find out more and to show your support for those who have suffered and to pledge to stand up against domestic abuse and violence in all its forms.”

The Violence against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act 2015 sets out to help challenge public attitudes, improve how we support survivors and train those who work for the council to understand what domestic abuse and coercive control looks like and know how to raise concerns.

Organisations taking part include Powys County Council, Dyfed Powys Police, Calan DVS, Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre and Welsh Women’s Aid (“ask me” ambassadors scheme).
