Schoolchildren in Newtown will not be getting a traditional Christmas dinner this year. Instead, they'll be having a filled sandwich, margarita pizza finger, breaded coated chicken or vegetable nuggets and other items.
The menu has been set out by Powys County Council for schools throughout the county, including Newtown, according to Newtown county councillor Joy Jones.
Cllr Jones has set up a petition to have the menu changed to a traditional Christmas dinner.
On her Change.org page she has already had over 5,100 signatures of support. She wants over 7,500.
"Powys County Council has decided to do away with the children's traditional Christmas dinner this year at their school in Powys," said Cllr Jones.
"Parents are very upset, disappointed and angry. School Christmas dinner is about so much more than just a roast dinner it is a day when the whole school comes together and there is a party atmosphere, in some schools staff serve the children their dinner and sit and eat with them.
"Children are all very excited and it is one of the best days of the school year. Many children have sandwiches throughout the year but often this is the one meal parent pay of them to have."
She added: "On a serious note for some children it may be the only traditional Christmas dinner they get as some parent are facing problems financially and can't afford to have big traditional dinner this year and with the introduction of universal credit this could be a struggle for some families. Sadly in Powys, there are families in real poverty."
"Powys County Council, please bring back to the school traditional Christmas dinner ... Turkey, Stuffing, pig in blankets Roast Potatoes, mash potatoes, veg (carrots and sprouts) etc .... Christmas pudding or ice cream."
