Newtown is preparing to mark the Armistice centenary

09/11/2018 @ 09:57

Preparations are underway in Newtown for the commemoration of the end of the First World War 100 years ago on Sunday.

A special Remembrance Day service will be held at the Cenotaph in the town on Sunday where members of the community, veterans, members of the Armed Forces and others will pay their respects to those who died in World War One and other wars.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council have been busy preparing for the day and  The Council have purchased and installed a new Remembrance bench to complete the set outside the Memorial Gates on the edge of the Town Hall Grounds.

With grant help from Powys County Council, it enabled the Town Council to refurbish and paint the Memorial Gates which finished the work previously undertaken on the War Memorial earlier in the year.

Working with local schools and youth groups, memorial stones have been placed in the War Memorial on display for the weekend.

The Town Council is hosting a Remembrance Tea Party on Saturday at the Elephant and Castle.

Limited tickets are still available, please call the Town Council on 01686 625544 to purchase a ticket for £3.
