Transport Minister Ken Skates has confirmed the Newtown bypass is on time for completion early next year.

His statement comes after Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George, said it could be completed by the end of this year if a hard pish was made.

In a statement, Mr Skates said work has progressed well with all main parts of the road's infrastructure now in place, such as the bridges.

At over 6.5 miles long, the new road is a key part of plans to improve communications in Mid Wales, including reducing congestion in Newtown.

"Good progress has been made on the bypass over recent months and the work programme continues at pace and on schedule," said Mr Skates.

Once opened, de-trunking of the road through Newtown itself will take place allowing work to be undertaken by Powys County Council to improve transport, pedestrian and cycling routes in the town centre.
