Plans for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Severn in Newtown have been backed by the town council.

Powys County Council revealed it wanted to create a dedicated bridge between Pool Road and Canal Road last month.

It forms part of the county council's sustainable travel plan for the town and would involve funding from the Welsh Government if successful.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council passed a motion in support of Powys County Council’s Sustainable Travel Plan and proposed bid for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge.

The motion states: “Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council welcomes the work by the Powys County Council to develop a sustainable travel plan for Newtown, and its proposals and bid for funding for a possible new cycle/pedestrian bridge downstream of the Cambrian Bridge, and looks forward to participating as a stakeholder representing the community in being involved with helping shape the design of the plan and bridge.”
