Volunteers and local organisations have helped make Newtown a better place over the past year, the mayor of Newtown has said.

Speaking following her recent mayor-making event in the town, Cllr Sue Newham, praised those who worked voluntarily making a difference.
She took her oath of office with the assistance of Rev. Alan Hewitt of Hope Church.

Councillor Newham listed some of the achievements of the last year, including the transfer of the green spaces from Powys County Council.

She thanked members of the Going Green for a Living Land Trust, praising their perseverance through difficulties. Addressing Stuart Owen, chair of the Land Trust, she said, "There really have been some very bleak periods and your patience and tenacity will result in a lasting legacy in this town."

She added: "This sense of community has deep roots in Newtown, going back through history. It gave the young Robert Owen valuable lessons about treating others with respect and kindness in the 1770s which went on to influence the way he ran his mill factories and organised his businesses.

“It also fuelled his writings which led to the birth of the Co-operative movement.  Newtown has been, and still is, a place where many individuals have had the courage to dream big dreams and plan impossible projects, made brave by the support and kindness of local people. Long may it continue!"

The event included awards for the employers of on-call firefighters in the town after Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council recognised the vital role that employers play in releasing firefighters when they attend emergency incidents.

The employers receiving awards were; Malbay Homes, Heart of Wales Property Services,  Maldwyn Dragons Gymnastics Club, Newtown Plastics, Texplan, National Canine Training Centre.

Along with the firefighters awards, there were awards to Tourism Events groups that put in hours of work to bring excellent events to Newtown, the Mayor thanked each group individually.
