A contract to build a new primary school at Carno has been awarded, allowing work to commence soon.
Oswestry-based Paveaways have been appointed to build a replacement primary school at Carno and major refurbishment work at Ysgol Glantwymyn.
The work at Ysgol Carno will mean pupils no longer having to be taught in mobile classroom.
Funding for the £2.8m project is split between Powys County Council and the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools programme, with a £500,000 contribution from Carno Recreation Association, donated by the Tirgwynt Wind farm Trust.
The schools are part of a federation of three Welsh-medium primary schools, made up of Carno, Glantwymyn and Llanbrynmair.
Cabinet member for Schools, Councillor Myfanwy Alexander said: "This project has partnerships in its heart, between Powys County Council, the community and Welsh Government to find the finance, between Paveways and local contractors to do the work and between the three school communities of Llanbrynmair, Glantwymyn and Carno whose federated strength shows that small rural schools can thrive in a modern context.
"We are proud to be building a village school, demonstrating our commitment to the two thirds of Powys residents who live in the countryside.”
Work at Ysgol Glantwymyn will include a new disabled toilet facility, new administrative space to improve safeguarding and improved car parking and drop-off area.
Construction will start imminently with Ysgol Carno due to open to pupils by January 2019.
The school federation has been operating since 2014 with a single governing body, a single leadership team and a new Headteacher and accommodates 157 pupils across three sites.
