Newtown's Morrisons supermarket is to host a sponsored silence for some of its staff on Saturday as part of a bid to raise cash for CCT equipment at the vandal-hit St Mary's Churchyard.

The event is being organised by the supermarket's local Community Champion, Zoey Swaine.

"As a store, we would like to try and raise funds to add security lights and CCTV for the Church of St Mary's to stop vandalism happening," said Zoey. "We are having a sponsored silence for some staff on Saturday the 7th July and collection on tills to raise the £5000 we need to kit out the church."

Last week MyNewtown reported how a spate of vandalism in Newtown had damaged buildings and tombs at St Mary's Church, the burial ground of Newtown's famous Pryce-Jones family and social entrepreneur, Robert Owen.

Other public street furniture in the town and the town council's own historic Brisco House at The Cross has been damaged.

Calls have been made in the past for CCTV at St Mary's where people have congregated in the past and damage caused.
