Residents in Newtown are being urged to share their ideas for new affordable homes in their area at two drop-in events next month.

It comes as Powys County Council prepares plans for between 40 and 50 homes on the site of the former Red Dragon public house in the town.

Powys County Council’s Affordable Housing Team has arranged the events, which will take place at Maldwyn Leisure Centre and Maesyrhandir Primary School.

The events have been arranged so that housing officers can get the views of residents on affordable housing and also establish the housing needs for the area.

The first event will take place on Wednesday. July 11 at Maldwyn Leisure Centre from 4pm to 8pm with the second event being held at the Maesyrhandir Primary School fair on Friday, July 13 from 3pm.

The council is looking to develop between 40 to 50 dwellings on the site of the Red Dragon pub in Maesyrhandir for affordable housing.

Cllr James Evans, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We are committed to developing 250 additional homes over the next five years that meet the needs of the local communities across Powys.

“Our Affordable Housing Team is working in communities throughout Powys to identify sites suitable for housing. Their work has seen us purchase the Red Dragon pub on Plantation Lane and we intend to build affordable housing on this site.

“These drop-in events are important as they allow us to gather the ideas from residents while we find out what the housing needs are for this area.”
