Plans to create a WiFi network in Newtown, allowing residents, businesses and visitors to access fast broadband wirelessly, are moving forward, MyNewtown understands.

Newtown Town Council has been considering the network and undertaking a feasibility study into the plan, first reported by MyNewtown in February.

A number of towns throughout the UK have set up similar networks, allowing access to broadband wirelessly as an alternative to fibre, copper and cellular networks and access.

The council's economy and environment committee will receive an update on the situation at its next meeting on Monday.

Earlier this year the Welsh Government said it was willing to listen to proposals from communities that had alternatives to conventional broadband, particularly in areas that could not receive good broadband speeds, fibre or 4G.

Parts of Newtown remain without high-speed broadband, along with 4G connectivity.

It is understood a survey has been conducted to look at how the WiFi network would work.

The committee will receive a verbal report from a councillor involved at the meeting.
