Newtown suffered a six-wicket defeat despite setting a healthy 246-7 at leaders Wem in the Shropshire Premier League.

Matt Knight (67), Ryan Davies (49) and Tom Foulkes (48) enjoyed a decent track to get Newtown off to a strong start, but the visitors’ opener Rishav Das (104) put them to the sword to see them home in the 39th over.

Welshpool’s Division One match with Market Drayton did not go ahead, but Montgomery’s Division Two promotion push remains on track after Andrew Barker scored 69 to beat Lilleshall by 57 runs.

Montgomery rallied from four down for a little over 20 runs to finish on a highly respectable 182, with Barker’s innings taking him to 324 league runs at a season average of 54. Lilleshall’s response failed to materialise as they were all out in the 41st over for 125 with wickets shared across five bowlers.

Llanidloes have boosted their Division Four mid-table spot with a victory over Quayside who were restricted to 154-6. In response, opener William Denham led the way with 58 to see them home in the 37th over for the loss of six wickets.

Guilsfield’s Division Four promotion bid has taken a turn for the worse after a second defeat on the bounce, this time at home to Harcourt.

Runs seem to be the problem and only Duncan Todd (22) made any headway as they limped to 104 all out. The visitors reached it for the loss of three wickets.

In the Reserve Divisions, Montgomery II lost by five wickets to high-flying Sentinel II in Reserve Division One after being dismissed for 98. The result leaves Monty at the foot of the table with key games approaching.

Sam Cooke hit 98 as second placed Newtown II kept the pressure on at the top of Division Two. Sam Morris added an unbeaten 50 as Newtown moved to 228-3 against Acton Reynald, before tight bowling restricted the visitors to 179-7 from their 40 overs.

In the third division, Welshpool II are enjoying mid-table comfort after opener Nathan Baines (51) led them through to a target of 170 for Lilleshall fourths to chase. Jordan Harding then took five wickets as the hosts were dismissed for 123.
