The plight of many people homeless, including those unseen in towns like Newtown, is to be highlighted as part of an event taking place on Friday.

Newtown Rotary Club is organising The Big Rough Sleep Out on Friday night to raise cash and awareness of homeless people in the area, larger towns and abroad.

"Newtown Rotary Club are conscious that homelessness and rough sleeping don’t just affect big cities and so they have organised an event to raise awareness of homelessness both at home and abroad," said Neil Grant of the town's Rotary Club.

"We also want to raise funds to support organisations that assist people who become homeless or that work to divert people away from a path that leads to homelessness."

The Big Rough Sleep Out takes place on Friday when more than 30 volunteers are spending the night sleeping in cardboard boxes.

"They are from all walks of local life but in common they will be bringing sponsorship for the event. Funds raised will be split between local and international organisations and the Rotary Club expect to support the Newtown Foodbank, Ponthafren Association, The Wallich, Shelterbox and Disaster Aid UK and Ireland but there will be others.

"We are very pleased to be supported in this by the NPTC Group who are allowing us to use the Newtown College campus for our venue and by RRT UK who are providing a hot breakfast for those involved."
