Newtown is to benefit from part of £1m of grants to help fund local transport schemes in Powys, according to the county council.

The funding, announced by the Welsh Government, has been allocated through the Local Transport Network Fund (£450,000); Safe Routes in Communities (£322,229), Local Transport Fund (£175,000) and Road Safety Grant (£101,850) with funding totalling £1,049,079.

Part of the Local Transport Fund will go towards designing an "active travel scheme" in Newtown.

Improvements will also be made to improve the public transport interchange facilities in Welshpool.

The Road Safety Grant will allow the council to continue to provide its road safety initiatives to make the roads in Powys safer for all users.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “I’m delighted that the Welsh Government has award this funding, which residents and businesses will benefit from.

“The funding is a substantial investment and will improve road safety, enhance public transport facilities and provide more and better routes that will enable the people of Powys to walk and cycle and to do so safely.”
