A new mega salt storage facility could be built in Newtown to help support clearing ice and snow on the area's roads.

Powys County Council is to consider building the new site in the town as part of a £1.5million investment in two strategic salt storage sites in the county.

While we're hoping that's the last of the snow we'll see until the winter, Powys, the council believes current storage is not enough to cater for the demands on keeping highways clear and follows a salt storage in the UK last year.

A report to councillors says current stock can cater for 23,000 tonnes of salt, but they need to increase that to 32,500.

Cabinet member for assets Cllr Phyl Davies is proposing the move to build the new storage facilities.

The report says that failure to increase stock levels could place the authority at risk.

Councillor Davies said: “Increasing salt storage will reduce the reliance on winter restocking, which is undertaken at a higher cost than summer restocking.”

Options put forward to councillors include building the new facility at Newtown, do nothing, or even store salt outside the county.
