Parents are being warned of an outbreak of scarlet fever in the area.
A number of suspected and confirmed cases have been reported in the Llanidloes area, although it is understood some cases have been investigated in the Newtown area as well.
The condition is not serious, but should be treated by a doctor who will prescribe antibiotics.
A warning has been issued by the acting head teacher of Llanidloes High School who has written to parents.
“New have been informed that a small number of children who attend Llanidloes High School have been diagnosed with suspected and confirmed scarlet fever,” said Mr R Williams.
“If your child has an underlying condition which affects their immune system, you should contact your GP or hospital doctor to discuss whether any additional measures are needed,” he added.
Scarlet fever is considered a mild illness that affects mainly children. Symptoms include a sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting.
These condition are then followed with a red rash on the chest and stomach and then spreads to other parts of the body.
The face can also be flushed red, but pale around the mouth.
Anyone who notices symptoms in their children should contact their doctor.
