"Serious concerns" over Newtown High School

12/03/2018 @ 02:32

MyNewtown understands school inspectors will publish a report into standards at Newtown High School on Wednesday, placing the school into special measures.

Estyn, which inspects schools and educational establishments in Wales, is understood to have undertaken a follow-up inspection at the school but found "serious weaknesses" which means it will place the school into special measures following a Section 28 inspection.

The school was inspected in 2015 when recommendations were made for improvements and a report was then published.

It is understood the inspectors have returned this year and have concerns relate to certain subjects including English and mathematics as well as other issues.

The report will mean the the school will have to put together a plan of action to address the shortcomings highlighted in the report.

If these are not satisfactory, Estyn and Powys County Council can take other actions.

The full report and its findings are expected to be published on Wednesday.
