Police and the emergency services are warning people not to travel unless necessary as the Beast from the East hit the area with its blast today and tomorrow.

Treowen Primary School is currently the only school open in the town, according to Powys County Council.

Roads in the area are becoming increasingly treacherous, particularly B roads and unclassified roads in villages surrounding the town.

The Met Office has said the area will be affected by more snow today, but tomorrow they have warned of heavy snow, combined with freezing temperatures.

Schools are expected to remain closed tomorrow, while some businesses are understood to have told staff to only go to work if safe.

Powys County Council is continuing to send its gritters along all main routes and B roads, although the amount of snow expected over the next 24 hours, combined with the freezing temperatures is expected to make driving treacherous throughout the area.

Residents are being urged to keep an eye on elderly and vulnerable neighbours and relatives to ensure they are safe.
